Genus: Saxifragafrom Latin saxum 'rock' and frango 'to break'
Species: ferruginea means 'rusty'
aka Alaska Saxifrage, Russethair Saxifrage. The small white five-petaled flowers branch off the upper part of a slender stem which rises to 1' (30 cm). The flowers are about 1/2" with two yellow spots at the base of each petal. Exquisitely shaped, the upper three petals are typically larger than the lower two. With age the center ovary becomes pink or red and torpedo-shaped. Usually found along rocky streambanks, wet rocks and moss, 2,5000' to 6,000' elevation. (ref. Clark, Blackwell)
