Genus: Luetkea after Count F. P. Lutke, 19th century Russian explorer
Species: pectinata means 'pectinate' like the teeth of a comb (refers to leaves)
aka Lutkea, Creeping Spirea, Mountain Spirea, Spiraea pectinata. The common name refers to the leaves which resemble a footprint of a partridge or ptarmigan. The evergreen sub-shrub creates dense mats. Captivating for their size the tiny white flowers are quite showy. Only about 1/4 " (5 mm) they form tight clusters atop stems rising 2 - 6". Yellow centers with many reproductive parts provide further accent which makes the overall cluster appear creame colored. Very common in dry measdows from 6,000' to 8,500' elevation. (ref. Pojar)
