Avalanche Lily, Erythronium montanum

Family: Liliaceae - LILY FAMILY
Genus: Erythronium is Greek erythros 'red' in reference to several pink species
Species: montanum means 'of the mountains'
aka White Avalanche Lily. Often found in large fields appearing like a snowfield, or "avalanche", thus the common name. The stem can reach 6" - 16" (15 - 40 cm) and supports up to three flowers (although as many as ten have been reported) and has a pair of lance-shaped leaves. The flowers have six extraordinary transluscent petals which sweep back to display long yellow anthers and a cream-colored stigma. Common in subalpine meadows, openings between 5,000' - 6,500' elevation. (ref. Blackwell)
