Genus: Clintonia after NY governor De Witt Clinton, developer of Erie Canal
Species: uniflora means 'one flower'
aka Bead Lily, Brides's Bonnet, Blue-bead. A single unbranched stem rising to as high as 6" (15 cm) supports a elegant single flower. The flower, 1" - 1.5" across, has six widely spaced pure white petals. In some years the bloom will be replaced by a bright blue berry. The glosy tongue shaped leaves are distintive raising from the base (basal) and are usually in pairs, sometimes trios and occasionally a single often rising above the flower. Very common especially in low elevation forests and not usually seen above 5,000 ft.
