Oceanspray, Holodiscus discolor

Family: Rosaceae - ROSE FAMILY
Genus: Holodiscus from Greek holos 'entire' and diskos 'disk', unlobed disc
Species: discolor referring to the change of color from cream to brown
aka Creambush. A shrub reaching to 12' (4 m) produces cascading lilac-like clusters of creamy white flowers oftern causing branches to droop and reminding one of waves braking on the ocean shore. In season the flowers turn brown and remain on the plants over the winter. Called 'ironwood' for its hardness and strength. Pioneers used in construction as pegs before nails were available and native people had a variiety of applications. Common and usually found on open slopes and along roadsides in low to mid elevations. (ref. Biek, Pojar, Strickler)
