Notes:

Brewer's Mitrewort, Mitella breweri

Family: Saxifragaceae - SAXIFRAGE FAMILY
Genus: Mitella means 'small capsule' in reference to the fruit
Species: breweri for William Brewer, botanical studies in Calif. in late 1800's
aka Feathery Bishop's Cap. The miniscule geometry of Mitreworts is fascinating and in the case of the Brewer's the antenna like petals are spaced between the five stamens vs. opposite them as in the Alpine Mitrewort. Stems can rise to 4 - 8" (10 - 20 cm); the wrinkled looking leaves are round to kidney-shaped up to 2" across. Discovering the differences of the two species requires careful observation but adds to the appreciation of these very unique flowers. Breweri is the more common and found in seep areas, streambanks to 6,000' elevation. (ref. Clark, Biek, Blackwell)
