Genus: Geum is derived from geyo, 'to impart a relish' (ref. Clark)
Species: macrophyllum for macro, 'large', and phyllum, 'leaf''
aka Large-leaved Avens. This species gets its name not because it has large leaves generally but for the disproportionate size of the top, or terminal, leaf, which can exceed 6" (15 cm) long. Overall height can reach 3' (1 m). The saucer-shaped flowers are bright yellow with five widely spaced petals at the tips of the branches. Common along roads, trails and open areas below 3,500' elevation.
