Family: Asteraceae - SUNFLOWER FAMILY, ASTER FAMILY (Compositae)
Genus: Arnica derived from Greek arnakis, a'lamb's skin'
Species: rydbergii after Per Axel Rydberg (1860 - 1931) author of western flora
aka Subalpine Arnica, Subalpine Leopardbane. Along with the Hybrid , A. diversifolia, and the Spearleaf, A. longifolia, Rydberg's is one of the rare arnicas in the Park. It is perhaps the most uncommon of the three because it generally ranges east of the Cascades (which may explain its location here). A low plant to 1' (30 cm) in height with two or three pairs of small leaves on the stems; lower leaves are larger, lanceolate, to about 4" (10 cm). Rare. When found likely to on open slopes in the high subalpine, lower alpine zones. (ref. Biek)
