Genus: Senecio is derived from 'senex', an old man, for lack of bristles or hairs
Species: fremontii after John Charles Fremont (1830 - 1890), pres. candidate
aka Dwarf Mountain Butterweed, Drawf Mountain Ragwort, Dwarf Mountain Groundsel. A small sprawling plant no more than 4" - 8" (10 - 20 cm) tall with yellow flowers two to three per stem. The leaves are the key to its identification. The leaves are mostly stalkless, thick, somewhat fleshy and coarsely toothed and are lance- to spoon-shaped. Usually found on talus and scree slopes at between 5500' to 9000' elevation. (ref. Biek, Pojar)
